Groups & Hashtags

Overview

Racery's #groups and hashtags let participants form sub-communities within a race and categorize their activities. Groups aggregate mileage for informal teams, while hashtags help you filter and track your exercise history.

What Are #Groups?

Groups let participants form or join intimate sub-communities within a race. You might be on a formal team (your department or office) but also belong to several groups like #beerdrinkers, #catlovers, or #hoosiers.

This is especially useful in larger races where you want a more personal connection with like-minded participants beyond your assigned team.

  • Groups can be any size (2 or more people)
  • Each group aggregates the total mileage of its members
  • Participants can belong to multiple groups simultaneously
  • Groups are separate from formal teams — they're optional and self-organized

Creating a Group

Step 1: Open Your Bio

Navigate to your race page and click Edit Bio.

Step 2: Add Group Names

In the Groups field, type your group names as comma-separated values. Each group name should start with #. For example:

#portland, #dogwalkers, #earlybirds

Step 3: Save

Save your bio. If the group already exists, you'll join it. If it's new, you've just created it — others can join by adding the same hashtag to their bio.

Joining a Group

To join an existing group, simply add the same #groupname to your bio's Groups field. There's no approval process — groups are open by default.

Tip: Browse other participants' bios to discover popular groups in your race, then add those hashtags to your own bio to join.

Group Leaderboards

Each group has its own mileage total, calculated from all members' logged activities. This creates friendly micro-competitions within the larger race — which running club can log the most miles? Which city office is the most active?

Using Hashtags

Beyond groups, you can use hashtags when logging activities to categorize and filter your exercise history.

  • Activity type: #morningrun, #lunchwalks, #yogaflow
  • Location: #trails, #treadmill, #neighborhood
  • Goals: #streakweek, #10ktraining
  • Social: #runclub, #parkrun

Hashtags accumulate on your personal bio page, making it easy to see patterns in your activities and connect with participants who share your interests.
